The I-55 Resurfacing contract consisted of twelve miles of Class D Patching and 4″ resurfacing of three mainline lanes with Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) placement, each direction, from County Line Road to Kedzie Avenue. In addition, approximately twenty-four miles of 3-3/4″ resurfacing of shoulders with N70 binder and surface courses, from I-355 to Kedzie Avenue, resurfacing approximately thirty interstate ramps with N50 poly-level binder and N70 surface, and fifteen bridge decks were also included in this contract. In order to maintain traffic flow, the majority of this contract was performed during off-peak hours under lane closures. In total, approximately 187,000 ton of asphalt millings were generated on this contract and nearly 200,000 ton of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) were required to complete this project.
CivCon Services, Inc., as part of the Construction Management Team, provided construction engineering services during the day and night work shifts. Duties included field inspection and measurements and documentation of construction activities. CivCon participated as a Protégé on this contract and was mentored by the Prime Consultant in the areas of Marketing and Business Development
